Education for Women
American girls did not have many "educational avenues" open to them after primary school. Emma Willard opened up a school in Troy, New York, primarily for girls, which is one of the nation's school for girls. Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts is the nation's first school that allowed both boys and girls. Four girls were admitted into the school's "degree program." When she opened up the school and let an African-American Woman join, people protested so much that she decided to only let African-Americans in, which created more mayhem. She was forced to close the school and leave town.
