The Cult of Domesticity
The Cult of Domesticity were customs that said for women to work in the house after marriage, and all other activities were restricted. The wife was sought to only care for the house and children. Unmarried women rarely had jobs that men did, but if they did they were only paid a fraction for the same work. Women could not even sit in juries or vote for causes, when they married, all of her property was their husband's.
