The Temperance movement was to ban the drinking of alcohol. Alcohol was said to make "evil" of some things.

Before the 1840s, doctors used to give their patients alcohol so they would not feel anything while operating on them, and many people used alcohol all the time.

People started to realize getting drunk can cause a lot of problems. People would start to protest the use of alcohol and try to make it much less legal than it already was.
