1800s

EFW = Education For Women
1821 Emma Willard opened an all girls academy in Troy, one of the first ones.
1837 Mary Lyon created Mount Holyoke for woman to attend in South Hadley, Massachusetts.
1831 Quaker Prudence Crandall created a school in Canterbury, Connecticut. After a few years, it was only for African American girls.
These leaders helped woman accomplish their goal into getting a better education and to move up in society's rankings. They are able to get better jobs and do much more things in life shortly after this.
