Many of the social reformers focused towards asylum and prison reforming because of the horrible conditions.

People all across the United States would join together and help stop the illnesses of people and the citizens who commit crimes and get sent to jail.

Alexis de Tocqueville described the conditions as "spectacle of the most complete depositism," meaning the conditions were very harsh and under heavy control.
