Water is the most abundant/important inorganic compound
-60-80% volume of living cells is water
-High heat capacity (prevent sudden changes in temperature)
-High heat of vaporization (sweating – when we sweat the perspiration evaporates cooling us off (removing heat)
Polar Solvent Properties- biological molecules can't react chemically unless they're in solution
-Water forms hydrogen layers (protects large charged molecules from the effects of other charged substances around then to prevent them from settling out)
-Reactivity- foods are digested by adding water to break the bonds
-Cushioning- Helps protect the body organs from physical trauma
Salts
-Calcium phosphates (most plentiful)- make bones & teeth hard
-Electrolyte properties like sodium & potassium are essential for nerve impulse transmission & muscle contraction
