Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
-bundles of collagen fibers are much thicker and arranged irregularly
-form sheets in body areas where tension is exerted
Cartilage
-tough but flexible
-Lacks nerve fibers and is avascular -up to 80% water
-chondroblasts are the predominant cell type in growing cartilage
Hyaline Cartilage
-most abundant cartilage type in the body
-large number of collagen fibers
-provides firm support with some pliability
-covers the end of bones
Elastic cartilage
- more like hyaline
-more elastin fibers
-provide strength
Fibrocartilage
-often found where hyaline cartilage meets a true ligament or tendon
-strong
Bone (Osseous Tissue)
-Support & protect body structures
-Provide cavities for fat storage & synthesis of blood cells
-Osteoblasts produce organic portion of the matrix
-supplied by invading blood vessels
Blood
-Fluid within blood vessels
-most atypical connective tissue
-doesn't connect things and give mechanical support
-transport vehicle for cardiovascular system
