The cult of domesticity
The cult of domesticity basically restricted women from pursuing anything after marriage besides house work and family. Very few women worked outside their homes and they earned only half the pay that the men got paid. Women couldn't even vote or sit on juries even though they were tax payers. Lastly, all women's property belonged to her husband after marriage including her own children.
