Body Planes and Sections
The human body is sectioned off into flat surfaces called planes. The three most frequently used planes are sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes (shown in picture as horizontal*). These planes all lie at right angles to each other. When planes are cut they produce sections. A sagittal plane is a vertical plane that divides the body into right and left parts. The midline sagittal plane is called a median plane, or midsagittal plane. The rest of the other planes are called parasagittal planes; para meaning near. Frontal planes, the second most common planes, lie vertically. They are used digo divide the body into anterior and posterior parts. Another name for a frontal plane is a coronal plane. The final most frequently used plane called the transverse plane, horizontally runs from left to right across the human body. This divides the body into superior and inferior parts. When transverse planes are cut into sections they can be called transverse sections, as well as cross sections. Diagonally cut planes between the horizontal and vertical planes are called oblique sections.
