Dorsal Body Cavity
The dorsal body cavity is one of the two large cavities within the axial portion of the body. It protects the fragile nervous system organs. The two subdivisions of the dorsal body cavity are the cranial cavity and the vertebral, or spinal cavity. The cranial cavity is found in the skull. It encases the brain. The vertebral, or spinal cavity, runs within the bony vertebral column. It encloses the spinal cord. The spinal cord is essentially a continuation of the brain, and because of this the cavities are continuous with one another.
