Epithelial Tissue
Epithelial Tissue is a sheet of cells that covers a body surface or lines a body cavity. It is a covering and lining epithelium, as well as a glandular epithelium. It is composed of almost all close-packed cells. Epithelial cells fit closely together to form continuous sheets. Tight junctions and desmosomes are included, bounding adjacent cells together. Epithelial Tissues have an apical surface. An apical surface is an upper free surface exposed to the body exterior or the cavity of an internal organ, and a lower attached basal surface. They exhibit polarity, which is unequal. Epithelial is also supported by connective tissue. They rest upon connective tissue. It is also innervated, or supported by nerve fibers, but is also avascular, which means its contains no blood vessels. Epithelial tissue has a high regenerative capacity. Some are exposed to friction which results in their cells rubbing off. They replace cells quickly by cell division.
