The anatomical position is the anatomical reference point at standard position. At this position, the body is erect, with feet slightly apart, and resembles "standing at attention", with the exception of the palms that are meant to face forward and the thumbs which face away from the body. The anatomical position is used to understand directional terms discussed throughout the book. The terms "right" and " left" refer to the person who is being viewed; not to those of the observer.
