Glycocalyx
Glycocalyx is a sugar covering that is a fuzzy, sticky carbohydrate-rich area at the cell surface. It is enriched by glycolipids and glycoproteins secreted by the cells that stick to its surface. Every cell has a different pattern of sugars in its glycocalyx. Glycocalyx has markers so that approaching cells recognize each other.
