Acids react with metals. They are substances that release hydrogen ions (H+). Acids are also defined as proton donors. When released into water, they release hydrogen ions, of portions, and anions.

Bases are proton acceptors. They accept hydrogen ions (H+) from acids. Common inorganic bases are hydroxides, like magnesium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide. Hydroxides dissociate in water and release hydroxyl ions (OH-) and cations.

The pH scale was created by a Danish biochemist and part-time beer Brewer named Sören Sörensen in 1909. The scale is expressed in moles per liter, or molarity. It runs for 0 to 14. Each successive change of one pH unit represents a tenfold change in hydrogen ion concentration. Solutions with a pH below 7 are acidic. Solutions above 7 are alkaline, or basic. If a solution is 7, the solution is neither acidic nor basic; it is exactly neutral with equal hydrogen ions and hydroxyl ions.

Dissociation of HCl
(1) HCl -> H+ Cl-

H+ = proton
Cl- = anion

Examples:
(1) NaOH -> Na+ + OH-

Na+ = cation
OH- = hydroxyl ion

(2) OH- + H+ -> H20
