Some colonists had already purchased land west of the Appalachians. This proclamation served only to anger the colonists, as they felt that the king was telling them where they could and could not live.
King George the Third issued this proclamation following the French and Indian War. This declared the Appalachian Mountains as the temporary western border for the colonies in order to avoid further conflicts with the Native Americans.
