GEORGE WASHINGTON
Who was he?
Born in 1732, George Washington is arguably one of the most important figures in American history. He first entered the military in the early 1750s as a major in the Virginia militia. He fought in the French and Indian War. Washington was the man who called for a boycott of British goods because of the Townshend Acts. In 1775, he was named the Major General and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces against England. His strategies played a major role in winning the Revolutionary War. Washington would go on to serve as America's first president in 1787 and serve for two terms before retiring to his home in Mount Vernon.
