Stamp Act
1765
This act placed taxes on almost all printed material in colonies, including newspapers, contracts, and wills.
This was an example of taxation without representation. England had directly taxed the colonists without their consent in order to help pay for the debt left by the French and Indian War. Colonists felt that there was a lack of representation for the colonies in Parliament.
