GEORGE GRENVILLE
Who was he?
George Grenville became prime minister of England in 1763.
After the French and Indian War, he decided to put an end to smuggling in the colonies and in effect stop losing money for England.
Grenville convinced Parliament to authorize two things in the colonies.
1. Vice-admiralty courts- took away the colonists' right to a fair trial with a jury. British judges were also promised 5% of confiscated goods if they found the defendant guilty.
2. Writs of Assistance- allowed customs officers to enter any location in order to search for smuggled goods.
