Lee's Resolution
This document, written by Richard Henry Lee, was first proposed to the Continental Congress June 7, 1776. It states that "That these United Colonies are, and of right to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved."
This document was adopted by the Continental Congress in 1777. It served as America's first written constitution.
