1)John cant expect a quick recovery. Cartilage is avascular and the aging cartilage cells lose their ability to divide, thus causing the cartilage to heal slowly when it gets injured.
2)The epithelium of the cutaneous membrane or skin is better to protect the body than the mucosa consisting of simple columnar epithelium, because the cutaneous membrane has keratin in it which is a hard protein and protects the anything under the skin. The simple columnar epithelium doesn't have that so it would be bad if the epidermis was made up of that instead of the epithelium with the keratin in it.
