Chapter 2
Question 19-Define acid and base and the concept of pH
1)Acid-Have a sour taste, and react with many metals. Acids are a substance that releases hydrogen ions in detectable amounts
2)Base-Have a bitter taste, feel slippery, and are proton acceptors, which means they take up hydrogen ions in detectable amounts
3)pH scale-A scale that goes from 0 pH to 14 pH. 0 pH is the most acidic, for example, lemon juice has a pH of 2. Distilled water has a pH of 7 which is neutral. The pH of oven cleaner is 13.5 which is very basic. The more acidic it is, the lower it will be on the pH scale, and the more basic it is the higher pH the solution has.
