Chapter 2
Question 20-Describe the general mechanism of enzyme activity.
1)Enzymes are a certain type of protein called globular proteins. They act as biological catalysts. The purpose of them is to speed up reactions in the body, without them it would be pointless. The catalysts don't cause the reaction, they make them go faster. The first thing that happens is the enzymes active site has to bind with the substance that it reacts with. Then they change shape so the substrate can fit together with the active site. The second step is where the enzyme-substrate has internal rearrangements that make the new product. The last step is where the catalyst kicks in and the enzyme releases the product of the reaction.
