Chapter 1
Question 10- Name the serous membranes and indicate common function
1)The Serous membrane is thin double layer membrane, that is in the walls of the ventral body cavity and the outer surfaces of the organs. The membrane wall lining is called the parietal serosa. It folds in onto itself to form the visceral serosa. This covers and protects the organs in the cavity. There is also a thin layer of lubricating fluid that is secreted by both membranes, so that they can move against each other with ease. This is crucial for the moving organs like the stomach and heart. The parietal pericardium lines the pericardial cavity, and the visceral pericardium covers the heart which is in the cavity. The parietal pleura lines the walls of the thoracic cavity while the lungs are covered by the visceral pleura. Most of the other organs in the abdominopelvic cavity are covered by the visceral peritoneum.
