Decapsulation & Die Verification

Laboratory Process Guide 2023

DECAPSULATION & DIE VERIFICATION

Decapsulation (Chemical)

Equipment: Chemical, beaker, hotplate

Destructive?: Yes

Duration: PR9 2-4hrs – AS6081 2-4hrs

Description: Chemical Decapsulation is one of two ways to remove the Silicon die from inside the part. Devices are placed in either Sulfuric Acid (plastic epoxy parts) or Nitric Acid (metallic parts) and left for 1-2 hours.

The acid is then poured away and all that is

left will be the die that was encapsulated within the part.

Once the
die has been retrieved, it is cleaned with Acetone and then stored in a box ready for Die Verification (see page 15).
