Role of glycocalyx......
There are two large families of glycocalyx molecules:
1) cell adhesion molecules- Velcro to other cells, helps migrating cells move past w/ there "arms", sends SOS signals to protect white blood cells
2) plasma membrane receptors-contact signaling(coming together of touching cells), electrical signaling( opening and closing of gates associated with an ion channel), and chemical signaling(neurotransmitters and hormones)
