Structure and function of epithelial tissue:
Epithelial tissue is sheets of cells that covers a body's surface or lines a body cavity
Characteristics:
-cellularity- composed of closely packed cells
-specialized contacts-cells fit close together to form continuous sheets
-polarity-has a pical surface or an upper free surface exposed to the body exterior or the cavity of an internal organ and a lower based surface. They exhibit polarity since the cells in the apical part differ than the ones on the basal surface
-supported by connective tissue- all epithelial sheets rest upon and are supported by connective tissue
-avascular but innervated-it's avascular since it contains no blood vessels and innervated since it is supplied by nerve fibers
-regeneration-it has a high regeneration capacity. It replaces cells via cell division
