Lysosomes:
-digest biological molecules safely; they can digest organelles that are not functioning properly for example. They arise from budding off of the Golgi apparatus. Other uses are to break down bone to release calcium ions into the blood and to break down certain tissues like the webs between the fingers and toes of a fetus.
Peroxisomes:
-used for detoxification; they are membraneous sacs that contain powerful enzymes like oxidases(which detoxify alcohol) and catalases. They self replicate by pinching off one another. Their most important function however is to neutralize dangerous free radicals( highly reactive chemicals with unpaired electrons that can scramble the structure of biological molecules) by converting them to hydrogen peroxide.
