Active and passive transport mechanisms:
Passive(with concentration gradient):
-simple diffusion- nonpolar and lipid soluble substances diffuse directly through the lipid bilayer like O2 and CO2
-facilitated diffusion- glucose, amino acids and ions can diffuse with the help of channel proteins
Active:
-moves solutes uphill and against the concentration gradient, uses ATP
Primary- sodium potassium pump which directly pumps sodium across the gradient. Uses the energy from hydrolysis of ATP
Secondary- one pump activates another like the Na+ K- pump; energy comes from energy stored in ionic gradients
