Three major types of chemical reactions are:
-synthesis
= a combination reaction; they are the basis of anabolic reactions which combine smaller molecules
Ex.) A+B->AB
-Decomposition
= broken down into smaller molecules; they are the basis of catabolic reactions which break bonds of larger molecules
Ex.) AB->A+B
-Exchange/displacement
= involve both synthesis and decomposition reactions
Ex.) AB+C-> AC+B
What are oxidation/reduction reactions?
-they are decomposition reactions that are the basis for catabolizing food to form ATP
Oxidized= the reactant loses the electrons and is the electron donar
Reduced= the reactant takes up electrons and is the electron acceptor
