15 Marcelling
Marcel Waving Process
Prepare the Hair
✔️Part hair on side from recession to crown and then vertically to the nape.
✔️Dry hair to 100%. It is preferable that hair be dried straight.
Plan the Look
✔️Determine whether you want a full marcel or a surface one. The full marcel will last longer, but the surface marcel will take less time to create.
✔️If you are going to do a surface marcel, determine where 1st wave will start. If possible, it should reflect natural movement of hair.
✔️Determine direction of 1st wave. This will determine direction of other waves.
✔️Determine the desired distance between the ridges.
Marcel the First Panel (Traditional Method)
✔️Starting @ nape, create a 1/2”-1” subsection, depending on density. Divide subsection into 2 panels, each narrower than length of barrel.
✔️Stand in front of panel, use little finger to pick up 1st panel.
✔️Place strand momentarily into comb held in your sub hand (teeth turned up).
✔️Apply iron to top of panel, approx 1” from scalp, & remove comb. The hair is now lying between the barrel and the tong.
✔️Use teeth of comb, move hair to right or left depending on which way you want to begin the wave.
✔️While still holding hair w/comb, close iron.
✔️Move hair further in desired direction to strengthen ridge.
