Levels of Structural Organization
2. Chemical Level- atoms combine to form molecules such as water and proteins. Molecules associate in specific ways to form organelles, basic components of the microscopic cells.
Cellular Level- all cells have common functions, but individual cells vary widely in size and shape, reflecting their unique functions in the body
Tissue Level- tissues are groups of similar cells that have a common function. 4 basic types are epithelium, muscle, connective tissue, and nervous tissue. Each tissue type as a characteristic role in the body.
Organ Level- extremely complex functions become possible, discrete structures composed of at least two tissue types that performs a specific function for the body
Organ System- organs that work together to accomplish a common purpose. ex. heart and blood vessels of the cardiovascular system make sure that blood circulates to carry oxygen and nutrients to all body cells.
Organismal Level- the sum total of all structural levels working together to promote life.
