Types of Epithelia (cont.)
Stratified Epithelia: contain two or more cell layers, divide and push to replace the older surface cells, the major role is protection.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium: most widespread, composed of several layers, has a protective role in the body. Found in areas subjected to wear and tear, forms the external part of the skin and extends into every body opening directly continuous with the skin.
Stratified Cuboidal and Columnar Epithelium: Cuboidal- mostly found in ducts of some of the larger glands (sweat and mammary glands), two layers. Columnar- found in the pharynx, male urethra, and lining some glandular ducts. occurs at transition areas between two other types of epithelia.
Transitional Epithelium: forms lining of hollow urinary organs, vary in appearance depending on degree of distension of the organ. Have ability to change shape.
