Major Energy Forms:
Kinetic energy- energy in action; seen in the constant movement of the smallest particles of matter as well as in larger objects. Does work by moving objects (push or pull).
Potential energy- stored energy; inactive energy that has the capability or potential to do work but is not presently doing so. When potential energy is released it becomes kinetic energy.
Chemical energy- the form stored in the bonds of chemical substances. Chemical energy in the form of ATP is the most useful form of energy-used to run all functional processes.
Electrical energy- results from the movement of charged particles. found in the flow of electrons along the household wiring and when ions move along cell membranes.
Mechanical energy- energy directly involved in moving matter (ex.legs moving to ride a bike).
Radiant energy or electromagnetic energy- energy that travels in waves called the electromagnetic spectrum: include invisible light, infrared waves, radio waves, ultraviolet waves, and X rays.
