Major Body Cavities and their subdivisions:
Dorsal body cavity: protects the fragile nervous system organs
-Cranial cavity: located in the skull, it encases the brain
-vertebral, or spinal cavity: runs within the vertebral column, encloses the delicate spinal cord.
Ventral body cavity: more anterior and larger of the closed body cavities. Houses internal organs collectively called the viscera, or visceral organs.
-thoracic cavity: surrounded by the ribs and muscles of the chest. Divided into lateral pleural cavities, which each house a lung, and the medial mediastinum- which contains the pericardial cavity, which encloses the heart, and surrounds the remaining thoracic organs (esophagus, trachea, etc.)
-abdominopelvic cavity: dome shaped muscle important in breathing, has two parts:
Abdominal cavity: the superior part; contains the stomach, intestines, spleen, liver, and other organs.
Pelvic cavity: inferior part, lies in the pelvis and contains the bladder, some reproductive organs, and the rectum.
*abdominal and pelvic cavities are not aligned with each other.
