Acids and Bases:
Acid: a substance that releases hydrogen ions in detectable amounts. Also defined as proton donors.
Base: proton acceptors, they take up hydrogen ions in detectable amounts (ex. hydroxides)
-pH is the measurement of units of the concentration of hydrogen ions in various body fluids. The scale runs from 0 to 14 and is logarithmic, solutions with a pH lower than 7 are acidic (hydrogen ions outnumber the hydroxyl ions), and solutions with a pH higher than 7 are alkaline, or basic.
