Tight Junctions, Desomosomes, and Gap Junctions
Tight Junctions: when a series of integral protein molecules in the plasma membranes of adjacent cells fuse together, forming an impermeable junction that encircles the cell. They help prevent molecules from passing through extracellular space between adjacent cells.
Desmosomes: mechanical couplings scattered along the sides of abutting cells that prevent their separation. (Anchoring junctions) Bind neighboring cells together, and contribute to a continuous internal network of strong “guy wires”, distributing tension and reducing he change of cell tearing when subjected to forces.
Gap Junctions: (nexus) a communicating junction that allows chemical substances to pass between adjacent cells. Present in electrically excitable tissues, such as the heart and smooth muscle.
