Solutions, Colloids, and Suspensions
-Solutions: homogeneous mixtures of components that may be gases, liquids, or solids. The substance present in the greatest amount is the solvent, while the substances present in smaller amounts are the solutes. True solutions are solutions containing solids, liquids, or gases dissolved in water.
-Colloids: also called emulsions, they are heterogenous mixtures that often appear translucent or milky. Solute particles are larger than those of solutions, but they do not settle out. They can undergo sol-gel transformations, which is to change reversibly from a fluid state to a more solid state (ex. jell-o)
-Suspensions: heterogenous mixtures with large, often visible solutes that tend to settle out (ex. mixture of sand and water).
