Epithelial Tissue
Epithelial tissue covers the body surface and lines internal cavities. The cells are closely packed in sheets. The underlying layer basal lamina is a thin sheet of glycoproteins. The cells can be in a single layer or many and have varying shapes. Epithelial tissue contains nerves but not blood vessels.
Epithelial tissue protects the tissues under it from injury and infection. It absorbs substances in the digestive tract. It has nerve endings that receive stimuli for sensory reception. It also can secrete substances in glands, filter and excrete.
