Plasma Membranes
The plasma membrane is made of a double layer of phospholipids called a the lipid bilayer. The phospholipids have a polar, hydrophilic head and a nonpolar, hydrophobic tail. The bilayer is formed with the polar heads facing outwards towards the cytoplasm and exterior of the cell. The hydrophobic tails go inwards. The lipid bilayer contains proteins many of which are floating, so the plasma membrane is called a fluid mosaic. Proteins provide transport in and out of the cell for hydrophilic molecules.
