Membrane Junctions
Tight junctions are protein molecules on neighboring cells that hold them close together and form an inpermeable junction. These junctions keep molecules from passing between the cells.
Desmodomes hold cells together through intertwining filaments attached to a plaque on the interior of the membrane. Thicker filaments spread from the plaque across the cell distributing tension across the connected cells.
Gap junctions connect cells and are tube-like to allow ions, sugars and small molecules to pass from one cell to the next.
All of the junction types connect cells to one another and help keep them in place. Both tight and gap junctions keep cells closer together than desmodomes. Other than their connective quality the junctions all have different shapes and functions.
