Chemical Reactions
Synthesis reaction: when a bond is formed; combination
A+B --> AB
Decomposition reaction: when a molecule is broken down into atoms or smaller molecules
AB --> A+B
Exchange reaction: when molecules react and form different molecules; displacement
AB + C --> AC + B
or
AB + CD --> AD + CB
Oxidation reactions, or redox reactions, are exchange reactions where electrons are exchanged among the reactants. They happen during the formation of ionic bonds. The one that gains electrons is reduced and the one that loses electrons is oxidized.
Redox reactions are important because they are the type of action that produces ATP.
