John cannot expect a quick recovery from the torn cartilage, because cartilage tissue is not reached by blood vessels, so it doesn't receive nutrients quickly, and the cells do not repair quickly.

Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium is better suited to protect the body's external surface because, unlike the mucosa, it is dry and the layers allow for the cells to be rubbed off without an issue. Also the mucosa would let things through the barrier, which doesn't protect very well.
