Cutaneous, Mucous, & Serous Membranes
Cutaneous membrane is the skin. It consists of stratified squamous epithelium, the epidermis, and dense irregular connective tissue, the dermis. It protects the body from the environment and injury.
Mucous membranes, mucosa, is a moist membrane made of secretions along cavities open to the exterior such as the digestive, respiratory, and urogenital tracts. They absorb and secrete substances.
Serous membranes, or serosa, are simple squamous epithelium on a layer of areolar tissue. They line the closed ventral cavities. They secrete serous fluid so the parietal and visceral layers slide against each other.
