Definition of Anatomy:
Anatomy is the study of the structure of body parts and their relationships with one another.
Anatomy is divided into three subdivisions: gross or macroscopic anatomy, microscopic anatomy and developmental anatomy.
Macroscopic anatomy is the study of large body structures which are visible to the eye and is studied in three ways: by region of the body the structure is located in, by the system(s) the structure is part of, and by how the internal structures relate to their location on the exterior of the body.
Microscopic anatomy is the study of structures too small to be seen by the naked eye and must be observed with the help of a microscope. Microscopic anatomy is further divided into cytology, the study of the cells of the body, and histology, the study of tissues.
Developmental anatomy is the study of the structural changes that occur in the body throughout its lifespan. Embryology, or the study of developmental changes prior to birth is a subsection of developmental anatomy.
