Acids, Bases, & pH
Acids, which have a pH of 6 and lower, are substances that release hydrogen ions. When they disassociate in water, acids become hydrogen ions, and anions.
Bases, which have a pH of 8 and higher, are substances that accept the hydrogen ions. When they disassociate, bases release hydroxyl ions and cations.
pH is a measure of the concentration of an acid or base. Pure water is neutral, neither an acid nor a base and has the pH of 7. The pH scale measures the amount of H ions compared to the number of OH ions in a solution.
