Negative and Positive Feedback
Negative feedback mechanisms help maintain homeostasis by reducing or shutting off the original stimulus that caused the imbalance, returning the variable to its normal levels.
Positive feedback mechanisms enhance the stimulus so that the activity is accelerated. This creates a waterfall effect, so positive feedback is used infrequently in things like blood clotting.
