In the twenty-first chapter, Jonas escapes from the community. First, Jonas goes on a morning ride to hide his bike near the river. He then comes back and has dinner at his dwelling. During dinner, Jonas's father tells him that everyone voted for Gabriel's release. They voted because even with an extra year, he has not learned how to sleep soundly on his own. Jonas is surprised by and mad because he now knows how they will release Gabriel. The next morning, Jonas is on his way to escape. He had taken his father's bike with a baby seat in the back. He needed the seat because he had taken Gabriel. When he started his journey, Gabriel was asleep because of memory Jonas had gaven him before they hd left. Gabriel had just slept but they had to sleep during the day to avoid the search planes. They would be cold when they came so they wouldn't track them.
