In the fourteenth chapter, Jonas finally understands what everyone meant by pain. It started when one day the Giver told him that he was in pain and there was to be no training that day. Jonas then asked the Giver why he was in so much pain. He had felt the sunburn the first day, but that was nothing. Jonas offers to receive a memory so that it will not be so painful for the Giver. The Giver agrees and gives Jonas a memory of a broken leg. The memory starts off with Jonas sledding down a hill. The speed increases and soon takes control of Jonas's steering. Suddenly, Jonas is flying through the air. He lands with a great halt. Then Jonas feels the "first wave of pain". It strikes his leg as if someone were slicing through his leg with a very, very hot blade. Jonas yells in pain. He waits for the memory to end but the horror continues. Jonas awakes with tears on his face. Jonas then asks why the community has a reciver. The Giver responds with saying that there might be disasters such as hunger, war, and many more dreadful things. When it was time to make a hard descisioin, the Comittee of Elders calls upon the Reciever to make the right decision and give advice to them. When Jonas returns home, his parents ask him what happened and if he wanted medication. Jonas knew that that was against the rules of his training so he said he was fine. That night, Jonas offered to take care of Gabriel since his parents were tired. Gabriel was sound asleep until the middle of the night. When he started crying, Jonas picked him up and started soothing him. He then started to see the memory of the boat sailing over the ocean. Jonas started to realize that he was transferring the memory to Gabriel. He then put him down and Gabriel fell fast asleep. When he started to cry again, Jonas picked him back up and let the whole memory transfer to Gabriel as he fell fast asleep once again. Should Jonas tell the Giver?
