In the thirteenth chapter, Jonas experiences a lot of things. For example, Jonas finally realizes that choices can be very dangerous at rimes. Jonas and the Giver talk about why there are not decisions to be made in the community. Then, when it comes to picking your job or mate, it could be hard and dangerous. While Jonas is walking home from school, he tries to give Asher the memory of color in some flowers. Asher gets creeped out and just walks away. The next day, the Giver gave Jonas another memory of pain. In the memory, Jonas is somewhere where there are live elephants. When he turns around, he sees men shooting an elephant as it falls to the ground. Jonas tries to tell Lily that elephants were once real, but Lily doubts her brother and keeps on walking. He then tried to pass the memory to Lily but it didn't work. The next day of training, Jonas and the Giver talk about family units. The Giver explains that the books lining the walls can only be seen by the reciever. If Jonas applies for a spouse and soon has a whole family, only he will be able to access the books. Jonas will have to keep them a secret from everyone. After that, Jonas would try to put color into everything. He would try to hold the sight of the blue sky, the green shrubbery and many more things.
