In the sixteenth chapter, Jonas receives a wonderful memory. After having a horrible idea of war, Jonas no longer wants the glory of being receiver. The Giver then explains that there are also many great memories with lots of fun and happiness. There are birthday parties, museums, paintings, colors, wilderness, and animals. Jonas then asks the Giver what his favorite memory is. The Giver then tells Jonas that the is very happy to share it. He was in a room with many people. There were kids, parents, and elderly. They were giving each other presents and there was love in the room. It was very colorful and beautiful. The Giver told Jonas that they were called a family and that there was love and hope. Jonas asked who the elderly were. They are grandparents. Jonas repeats and asks who they are. The Giver then states that they are the parents-of-the-parents. Jonas never thought of that. In his community, you would never even see your grandparents or even your own parents release ceremony. When Jonas comes home he asks his parent if they love him His parents chuckled and told him to use proper language. They said love was meaningless but it was powerful to Jonas. They ask if he understand and he says yes. That was his first lie that he was protected by his new Receiver rules. Jonas then talks with Gabriel. There could be hope and love, Jonas says in the book. Every night, Gabriel would sleep with Jonas and he would receive a memory. He talks with Gabriel about how things could change.
